Outsourcing accounting services has long remained a privilege reserved only for larger corporations. But now, the affordability and cost effectiveness of using outsourced accounting services is attracting small businesses as well. Small businesses normally have a lot of functions and very less resources for completing them. Using expert bookkeeping and accounting service providers for outsourcing accounting functions save small businesses a lot of resources, which can then be utilized somewhere else within the business.
But the main query a small business entrepreneur will have is this: Is outsourcing accounting services really worth it for my small business? The answer to this is complicated and requires evaluating the pros and cons of using a firm for financial functions of the business.
There are advantages attached to hiring a firm for outsourced accounting which are especially applicable to small businesses:
- The first and most important advantage of using an outsourced accounting service provider is its cost effectiveness, with an attractive possibility of saving up to 40% costs compared to in-house hiring.
- Small business accounting requirements can be handled easily by expert bookkeeping and accounting service providers through their expert staff
- You can choose to hire only those services which are applicable to your business
- You save valuable time by using accounting services which you can then dedicate to the core business activities
- You don't have to hire, train or retain in-house accounting staff
One drawback that can be associated with outsourcing accounting functions is that there are many companies which are into the domain of accounting services and it is a difficult task to filter out the experienced and genuine ones from the inefficient ones. So select an accounting service provider with a lot of care, and take the following factors into consideration:
- Does the outsourced accounting service provider have experience in your industry?
- Can it provide valid references of its current/past clients?
- Has it dealt with accounting functions of small businesses?
- Can the accounting service provider provide doorstep service if required?
- Is the accounting firm ready to sign a contract with you detailing the terms and conditions and guarantees of service?
- Is the accounting service provider flexible enough to allow you to scale your bookkeeping and accounting requirements up or down?
- Are the data security measures of the outsourced accounting service provider in question enough to protect sensitive information related to your small business?
In case you get positive responses to most of the questions posed above, you can rest assured that the firm you are considering outsourcing accounting services to is an appropriate one for your business.
There are many advantages of outsourcing accounting services for small businesses, which far surpass the disadvantages. If you get the right service provider, it can become a partner in helping you develop your small business. As a small business owner, you can consider hiring a professional bookkeeping and accounting service provider who will help you focus on the core activities of the business and grow it appropriately.

New small business, tips on filing taxes?
My husband started a very small landscaping business this year (it is a side job–he has full time employment elsewhere). He has no employees, no business i.d., but he has a dba account in his ss# that all monies in & out for the business go through. How do I file taxes? What about his truck and equiptment (all of which we already had when he started the business)? TIA

Complete form Schedule C to report his income and to take his expenses (it gets attached to your tax return). His SSN can be used as his business ID number. He can deduct expenses for the business use of his truck and equipment. It’s all done via the Schedule C, so this is the best place to start (even if you do your taxes online print out the Schedule C so you get ideas about deductions:
The net amount (income minus expenses) from the Schedule C gets carried to your tax return & gets added in with your income.
You will also have to complete a self employment tax schedule if your net income is $400 or more. Here’s a link to the form:
Sounds complicated, but just follow the form or do it with tax software. If you need any other forms you can get them at

I would suggest using a software program that you can put all of his business affairs into. I prefer Quickbooks Pro, it does everything. It does payroll, purchasing, prints checks, invoicing, and prepers financial statments on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. It can basically do everything your being asked to do, and then some. The link below is for Quickbooks… there is a free version for you to try as well as demo’s. THis is a complete small business accounting program, it will require a lot of data entry on your part as first, but once it is up and running, it is very simple to keep up, and is a huge help come tax time. This all depends also on weather or not he has a computer there:) If not, might suggest he gets one, makes everything so much simpler. Good luck, I know you have your hands full.

How about some organizational tips for a small business?
My father has recently opened his own small business, a landscaping company. It’s a one-man show, he does all of the work, accounting, etc. At the end of the year, when it comes to tax-time and totaling, he is always scrambling to get everything together.
My father is not very computer savvy, and I’m looking for some quick and easy ideas for him to stay organized on a daily basis, so his end of the year isn’t so dreadful.

I can definitely understand the predicament of your father. Here’s some tips that can help improve his book keeping:
1. Make sure he has a special place or box where he puts all receipts for business expenses. It would be best to sort it by month, but if he can’t, at least finding receipts for business deductions at the end of the year wouldn’t be so bad.
2. Have a separate place or box for all his invoices and contracts. Again it would be best if someone could tally his income every day or at least every month, but if he can only do it once a year before tax time, at least he knows where all the information are.
3. If he’s not computer savvy, look for some manual products that he can really use. It can be as simple as a big ledger or accounting notebook where at the end of the day he lists all his income and expenses. Or you can use a system such as Tax Minimiser system which is a paper based daily planner system designed specifically for keeping track of your business expenses and income.
4. Hire an accountant or bookkeeper for him
