Is The Accounting Software Easy to use...
Does the software which you are testing require extensive consulting and re-consulting of the help section of the program?
If you purchased a program and it came with a manual, do you have to keep it next to the computer all the time as you almost always need to open it?
In today's world there is no reason to have to use programs which are difficult. In times gone past it took only a few minutes to make entries into a book. Look at your software and see if it is easier to have a set of paper accounts, if so then I believe the software is to hard for anyone to use.
Small Business in 2009 should be able to have access to easy to use accounting software
Will This Software Save me Time...
Why is it that many of the accounting programs require you to perform so many tasks just to enter a simple transaction.
I see time and time again, small businesses, mums and dads, wasting hours and hours because the software is just so useless at performing simple processes. Accounting Software should save you time not waste time.
Why would you place an empty bucket on a bench top and then go grab a glass and spend the next 20 minutes collecting water from the tap one cup at a time to fill the bucket. This is what most of the accounting programs on the planet are doing, they are wasting your time, day after day.
Do I need Previous Experience...
I challenge you to pick up a newspaper on any day and not see advertisements offering training courses or instruction on how to use some of those big name brands in software. First you purchase the software then to be able to use it you need major accounting and bookkeeping skills, this is all wrong.
Bookkeeping is a simple task of collecting income and receipts and recording the information so you can come up with an amount of taxable income.
Most of us already know that expenses are things which we purchased and income is money which we earned. Why is it that many of the programs in the market place almost force you into having to acquire new skills and experience in bookkeeping just to use them.
Do I Need 100's of Reports...
Looking at the accounting software you need to consider if its going to be easy to obtain the information that you need to report your income tax. In the end this is all most small businesses need.
The software also needs to meet your individual needs by being able to issue invoices if you need it to, account for sales tax, issue quotes and any other item you deem necessary.
But apart from that do we need all the extra's.. All the 100's of reports and graphs that so many of them tell us are necessary for good business practices. Yes I agree that if I was running a major company and employing 100's of staff that I may need to track exactly which areas make money.
Don't let all this extra unnecessary stuff cloud your judgment on which program will best suit your needs.

what is the best accounting software for small business?

Depends on how you define ‘best’. It could be the cheapest or the one offering most features. These two usually don’t come together, but there are notable exceptions that offer a pretty good trade-off. I found a web site recently that is an excellent resource for small business accounting software:
